Sea Kayak Dooneen

Sea Kayak Dooneen today with Nadette, the photos were taken with an old Casio compact in a dive box and the lens often had salt water on it. Dooneen was the site of the first of the Allihies Copper Mines and it opened in 1812. The tunnels are visible right down to sea level and it must of been a hell of a place to work in anything other than good weather.

The kayaking is easy to Dooneen and safe enough for most paddlers with average ability. When your done you can head into the village for a pint at O’Neills bar and restaurant and enjoy a nice meal.

Choughs Allihies Mines a protected bird which is known as the friendly crow rearing their chicks mainly on sea cliff areas but also in the mine shafts of the old Copper Mines of Allihies on the Beara Peninsula. Recently I was contacted by Carol who used to work at the museum. She was keen to do a one hour survey of the comings and goings of the birds as part of a statistical survey for Ireland. Nationally these birds have been declining so it is important to keep up the counting of them to see how they are doing. We spent a nice afternoon counting birds in and out of the shafts and seeing if they were carrying food or cleaning out nests. We did not see any chicks but they can be heard screeching for food fairly easily. Very worthwhile thing to do.

Beara Charity Cycle 2014

Beara Charity Cycle 2014 was a fun weekend with fantastic weather. We cycled from Castletownbere to Dingle taking in Molls gap which comes out to 146 KM on a scorching day. That is apart from the five lads who decided to do the ring of Kerry too which made their day a 220 KM day. Of course I was cycling so only have a few shots on day one of the start in Town and the food stop at Kenmare and Castlemaine. There was plenty of food too so nobody bonked…

On day two after a few pints the night before we headed back but went a slighter longer route through Kilgarvin making it 156 KM and I think most people were happy with their fitness levels as we all felt good riding again, at least after the first few KM.
