St Patricks Day

St Patricks Day in Castletownbere 2015 was a great event. The weather was with the crowd and lots of floats turned up for the day hoping to take the first prize for the best dressed up team. There was the normal inter school competition to see who would be the top of the bunch and some of the principals were fighting for the top position…

I still don’t know who won. In any case I put together a video of the floats and did it twice, one with the natural sound of what was going on and the second backed by the Lehanmore Community groups playing in Mac Carthy’s bar after the event.

Pictures are good but a film makes it real

Looking forward to next year. In any case I reckon Bike N Beara should have it….

Crows Head Crossing

Crows Head Crossing, re-enacting the crossing of the 60’s that Tadhg Roger O’Sullivan used to do to put sheep on to graze the 8 acres of grass on the island at the end of Crows head. The Lehanmore Community Centre had the idea to commemorate the crossing and contacted Kerry Mountain rescue team to see if they would like to help. They in turn asked the Castletownbere Coast Guard and RNLI to come along and make it a joint effort. The Kerry Mountain Rescue team did a great job setting up the “cables” and four or five people were taken across and back again. A large crowd turned up to watch and fun was had by all. The evening talk in the Community centre was very entertaining. I would just like to say thanks to all concerned and especially Lehanomre Community Centre and its team who pushed it on.

Castletownbere Coastguard Shannon Helicopter

Castletownbere Coastguard Shannon Helicopter (R115) tonight on the towns GAA pitch, a very interesting training session on how to help a helicopter crew to lower a stretcher and lift it (high line) whilst at the same time removing the spinning effect which would normally occur due to the down force of the helicopter. The crew arrived from Shannon and we set off a flare to help them coordinate themselves. They then landed and we had the pleasure of some chat and a visit aboard the helicopter. We then had a briefing and the team split into two groups to be able to try out the techniques explained to us. Great fun and an amazing amount of wind generated from the helicopter when it was close to the ground.

Many thanks to the crew from Shannon we had  a blast…
