anything to do with cycling mainly in Ireland and the south west

Wild Atlantic Challenge

Wild Atlantic Challenge event organised by the Lehanmore Community Centre was a tough task. Ride 120KM from Lehanmore across tough roads to Cronin’s yard. Where other people would join the cyclists to climb Carrauntoohil. The highest mountain in Ireland at 1039 meters. Participants had the chance to do both or one of the challenges.

Breakfast was served at six am and then 20 cyclists set off on the tough cycle, with 1300meters of height gain to get them to Cronin’s yard. On the way breakfast was supplied by Supervalu of Kenmare, thanks. Arriving at Cronin’s for about 1PM the cyclists met up with the walkers and in all about 40 people walked up and down the hill in between four and six hours.

Money was raised for Kerry Mountain Rescue and Lehanmore Community centre. Lots of laughs were had during and after the BBQ supplied by the Kerry Mountain Rescue team.

A great event and if it happens again should not be missed. Many thanks to the organisers.

Beara Charity Cycle July 2015

Beara Charity Cycle July 2015. The Beara Charity Cycle has had a change of circuit and a change of date. The new circuit allows for people to see the old Beara Road from Eyeries around the coast to Ardgroom. The date change is due to the clash with the Kenmare cycle weekend.

watch a new updated video including the new loop around the Ring of Beara from Eyeries to Ardgroom

Beara Charity Cycle July 2015

The new circuit is basically two loops, the first loop is the longest at 69 KM and goes from Castletownbere to Allihies and on to Urhan and Eyeries. From there the Ring of Beara is followed along the coastal road towards Kilcatherine and on to Ardgroom. Then back to Town which makes for a circuit of 69 KM.

Back in town for a cup of tea and then the loop from town to Adrigole over the Healey Pass into Lauragh and back via the Festival of Eyeries. It is great to be able to stop in Eyeries for some refreshments and support their village festival. The second circuit is 53KM. So total is 122KM these distances are approximates.

Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross Race

Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross Race an event that I used to read about way back in the days of Eric Stone and John Atkins. I was a young cyclo-crosser from the South East competing on Saturdays and Sundays in the late seventies. The allure of that race was great but I was still a schoolboy racer so it was not to be. All these years later and my friend John was having his fiftieth birthday the day after competing in this years event. I arranged to fly over from Ireland and we drove to the event and slept in his van.  The day arrived and the race was on, all I had to do was to go to two different spots on a spare bike and give him his water and gels.

I was very impressed with the speed of some of the riders not least the winner Rob Jebb, and am inspired to maybe sign up for the race next year, if Irish men are allowed 😉 . It really is a classic event and any one who completes it should be proud of their ability, well done.

Watch a short video I managed to put together with a few clips…

My “focus” was on John so I was looking to be where I needed to be at each spot where he had asked me to pass him his “pouch” and water bottles and not taking photos.
