Coastguard Display at Lehanmore

Coastguard Display at Lehanmore, the Castletownbere team displaying the procedure of lifting a casualty in a stretcher up a cliff. These shots show what happens at the top of the cliff and not the actual climbers and stretcher. The work at the top of the cliff involves a number of team members. When the hauling begins it takes a number of pullers, the amount depending on the ratio of the pulley system. In these pictures the ratio is 5:1

Castletownbere Coastguard Shannon Helicopter

Castletownbere Coastguard Shannon Helicopter (R115) tonight on the towns GAA pitch, a very interesting training session on how to help a helicopter crew to lower a stretcher and lift it (high line) whilst at the same time removing the spinning effect which would normally occur due to the down force of the helicopter. The crew arrived from Shannon and we set off a flare to help them coordinate themselves. They then landed and we had the pleasure of some chat and a visit aboard the helicopter. We then had a briefing and the team split into two groups to be able to try out the techniques explained to us. Great fun and an amazing amount of wind generated from the helicopter when it was close to the ground.

Many thanks to the crew from Shannon we had  a blast…

Castletownbere Coast Guard

Castletownbere Coast Guard were out last night for a cliff exercise at Dooneen (near Allihies). The team trains every two weeks to keep prepared and up to date with rescue procedures. Here four sets of ropes were set up to practise different scenarios: for example rescuing or assisting people who have fallen off a cliff or become stranded by incoming tide. All the exercises went well and the team finished off with a short visit to the bar.
